GeoShade

This tool is an ArcGIS extension and toolbar for calculating landscape shade patterns. The application uses an input tree or building GIS layer with attributes that define the dimensions for each tree or structure. Shadows and overall shade are calculated for a specified time period and location. The tool calculates the sun position based on the latitude, longitude, time zone, daylight saving time, date, and the time of day. A 3D GIS polygon is constructed based on the tree height, base height, width, crown shape, crown density, and dbh. For each tree polygon a shadow polygon is calculated. This tool allows precise shadows to be calculated within a GIS based on map layer information. The shadow can be used to simulate and predict shade patterns in landscapes and solar energy potential.
